Film review – First Cow (2019)

First Cow

The films of independent US filmmaker Kelly Reichardt are often discussed for their minimalism and realism, but one of the elements that most defines her work is the unexpected warmth she brings to the places and people that appear on screen. Reichardt frequently tells stories about marginalised people, often her films are about hardship and they often do not have obvious closure, and yet there is something extremely comforting about the serene way she invites her audiences into the worlds of her protagonists, as they move through rural and small-town settings that are shot with such affection.
