Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods follows four African-American war veterans returning to Vietnam looking for treasure. It’s wildly uneven with confronting tonal shifts, but I loved it. Lee has long been a master at embedding politics within genre storytelling to create powerful links between the past and the present.

The Assistant depicts a young woman’s work day at a film production company rife with emotional abuse and sexual harassment. It brilliantly captures a toxic culture of complicit submission where complaints are strategically downplayed and everybody is stuck in self-preservation mode.
